La Femme sind anders, La Femme sind unglaublich, La Femme sind ein Mysterium. Letztere Aussage fällt ziemlich häufig in Verbindung mit der in Paris lebenden Band, aber nun ja; Es ist die Wahrheit. La Femme, die eigentlich aus Biarritz stammen, wurden 2010 von den Songwritern und Musikern Sacha Got und Marlon Magnée gegründet. Somit bilden die beiden das Herz der Band und sie erhielten im Laufe der Zeit immer mehr Unterstützung von weiteren Musiker:innen. Spätestens seit ihrer Single Où va le monde (2016) sind La Femme international gefeiert und geliebt.
Ihr musikalischer Stil lässt sich unmöglich in eine Schublade packen, dafür ist ihre Bandbreite viel zu groß und das beweisen sie vor allem auf ihrem neuen, dritten Album Paradigmes. Irgendwo zwischen Cold und New Wave, Yéyé, Psychedelic, Surf Rock, Elektro und Punk, haben sie schon lange her ihren ganz eigenen Sound kreiert und dabei bleiben sie nie konstant. In den neuen Songs wird statt wie gewohnt Französisch auch mal auf Englisch gesungen in Foreigner, Spanisch in Le jardin oder total absurd Banjo mit Opern-Gesang kombiniert in Disconnexion. Mit hypnotischen Sounds und oftmals sehr düsteren Texten zieht Paradigmes seine Hörer:innen in seinen Bann und führt sie in eine verdrehte Welt. Keiner der 15 Tracks ist so wie der andere, es gibt so viel unterschiedlichen Inhalt auf einem Album zu entdecken und trotzdem reiht sich alles ein und wird zu einem großartigen Ganzen.
Verstehen oder nicht verstehen?
Wahrscheinlich hat man bereits rausgehört, dass mich La Femme persönlich sehr begeistern — und das trotz meiner sehr eingestaubten Französisch-Kenntnisse. Dabei bin ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass man überhaupt kein:e Kenner:in der Sprache sein muss, um sich für diese Band begeistern zu können, denn sie ist einzigartig, fesselnd und die Atmosphäre universell spürbar. Und mal ehrlich, wofür gibt es online Text-Übersetzer und die Untertitel-Funktion bei YouTube? Ihre Musikvideos, die eher wie Filme wirken (vor allem zu Le sang de mon prochain und Paradigme, große Empfehlung!) und ihre Art sich zu präsentieren, verleihen den Eindruck La Femme seien eigentlich gar keine Band, sondern in ihrer Gesamtheit eher ein Kunstprojekt.

Immer, wenn ich irgendwann mal in die Kommentarspalte der YouTube Videos oder Instagram-Posts von La Femme geschaut habe, gab es mindestens eine Person, die sie als “Genies unserer Zeit” oder als “nicht von dieser Welt” bezeichnete. Tatsächlich wundert es mich überhaupt nicht, dass Fans aus allen verschiedenen Ecken der Welt in den Kommentaren diese Ansicht teilen. Das Bizarre, der abstrakte Sound und die Überromantisierung der typisch französischen Ästhetik, die La Femme mit allen Mitteln ausreizen, erwecken die Neugier. Man kann La Femme nicht wirklich begreifen, aber das muss man auch gar nicht, um ihre Präsenz zu genießen. Nun hatte ich die Ehre Sacha Got zu fragen, was mir auf dem Herzen lag. Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, hätte ich am liebsten einfach nur mit einem “Wie macht ihr das bloß???” losgelegt.
La Femme im Interview
Dascha: Hey, I’m glad this worked out! How are you? Are you excited about the album release?
Sacha Got: Yes! I’m very happy to finally put it out. It’s been too much time we had the songs in our hardrive. We are happy to share it now.
Dascha: When did you start working on that album? How long was this process?
Sacha Got: It’s a mix of a bunch of songs we did over the years, from 2012 to 2018. In many different places but we finished it between France, Spain and the USA.
Dascha: The songs on Paradigmes are so different from each other; there are so many styles and themes. Where did you get your ideas and inspirations from?
Sacha Got: From everything, I would say. For the music we like to cross all the styles we love and they can be very different. From country to electro, arabic music or rap. We like to mix everything together.
Dascha: Was there a specific concept that guided you through this whole album?
Sacha Got: There is no concept. But at the end we found a concept with the videos and we are even working on a full movie that is gonna come out with the record.
Dascha: Which mood or feeling would you like to get a person in by listening to Paradigmes?
Sacha Got: We like to go deep. And let the listeners have some big feelings inside their bodies. It can be happiness, sadness, nostalgia or hope or anything else. But we like to feel.
Dascha: Why do you decide to sing in other languages than French sometimes? Like on Foreigner or Le jardin.
Sacha Got: Because we are making world music.
Dascha: Nouvelle-Orléans was one of the songs that immediately caught me. Could you explain what the song is about? Especially for those who don’t understand any French.
Sacha Got: It is about a guy going on the road and leaving his hometown, New Orleans. He went to a dark moment and he lost his mom. But now he wants to go back to the light and shine and leave all the negativity behind him.
Dascha: Do you personally have a favorite song on the album?
Sacha Got: No, it depends on the moment.
Dascha: I really enjoyed your latest music videos, especially the one for Disconnexion and the Paradigmes: Introduction with the Michel Foucault impression. Can you help me to understand the music video? There were so many characters and in my head, I was torn between a couple of deep interpretations and “Ah, this guy is on drugs and just having a crazy trip”.
Sacha Got: Mmmh, it’s like a metaphor of the artifices, that everybody uses in life. The guy is doing a smoky speech and then going through his mind.

Dascha: Speaking of Disconnexion; there are so many different music genres mixed up in one song. One might think that they would never fit together but somehow you still make it work in an incredibly nice way. Why did you decide to mix them together in a song?
Sacha Got: I think this is the funny part about making music in 2020. You can’t invent a new style like rock and roll or soul. But you can mix all of those. It’s just an evolution. And music and art have always worked like that since the very beginning.
Dascha: How did the band change since your last album and what made these changes happen? Both, the music and the band members. Did you collaborate with new people on this one?
Sacha Got: It’s still Marlon and me writing the songs and Sam working with us in the studio, too. We did more on our own on this time. We all have little home studios in our places now and we can record with protools everywhere. On this record there are more additional musicians like the horns and the banjo players.
Dascha: Whenever I listen to one of your songs, I think “Yeah, this is so La Femme-style!”. Did you have a specific idea of the sound you wanted to create when you started as a band?
Sacha Got: At the beginning we were mixing 60’s French Yéyé, surf music, and cold wave. We wanted to make a band between The Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, in this spirit.
Dascha: At the end of interviews we always ask about an “Untold Story”, that means a little secret or a story about you that the public might have not heard yet. Do you have anything in mind?
Sacha Got: I went to Gibraltar two years ago and it was one of the most weird experiences ever. It was like the space and the time went wrong and different. I felt like Marco Polo. It was unique and since then I thought about my life in a different way.
Dascha: Thank you for your time! I’m really looking forward to see one of your shows on tour when life gets back to normal.
